INTRODUCTION AND THE PHASES OF YOUTUBE

As most people know I have made a few videos on youtube on how it works and how the changes have affected the way people search for videos on their site. This is the first time in over a year I have discussed this subject in depth since April 2009. Some people may ask why talk about this again now? Simple. Since my last video there have been some people that have questioned what I have said in the past so I had to wait until now to see what changes took place and how they affected the community as a whole. It would not be possible to make a follow up video or blog until enough time had passed to see first hand how channels grow and get views today as opposed to back in 2006.

For those that have completely forgotten how youtube used to work and look, here are the phases of youtube from 2007 to 2010 or as I like to call it “the de-evolution of youtube.”

The Phases of Youtube

The De-Evolution of You Tube

Most people now can’t even remember what the site looked like back in 2007. I even forgot that you used to be able to see the rating count and the comment count right on the videos of the day page. These changes came gradually, small incremental changes that happen every 6 months or so. Nothing usually too drastic at first glance, just the removal of the date added, the comment count, the rating count and now the ratings made completely invisible makes you wonder what they will change in the next 6 months to 2 years. Don’t get me wrong, youtube has made some very good changes on the site as well like the annotations and HD, but if people can’t find your videos to watch them, who cares.

More important than any other aspect of that image is the box to click and “show only partner videos”. That was when I saw the writing on the wall. With the click of one button all non-partner videos were removed from the site. Since I was not a partner I knew that every single video I ever made on youtube would be removed that easily. That was the moment that I knew the exact direction of this website. While they did remove the red triangle and the visible button from above the video search, they did keep that on the “more options”.

So if you are not currently a partner, with one click of the button all your videos can be made invisible. That is a fact.

So I am writing this for those people interested in knowing why their channels don’t grow at all while others gain tens of thousands a week. Why their views have gone down even though their videos remain the same quality and their channel gains more subscribers than before. I am also doing this to expose the double standards and hypocrisy of youtube and how they enforce their rules differently from channel to channel.

I know that less than 3% of the people that see this information will actually read it all according to this famous speech from the movie Network.

THIS IS A MUST WATCH CLIP!!! SO IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT, CLICK IT!

This information below is not all the information about this subject out there, but this is a good deal of the info that I have to share with you about my personal experiences with this site as well as what I have seen happen to other users. I hope you take the time to look at it and find at least some of the information helpful. Some people may find this to be a VERY long post, but I would say it is pretty short considering it covers almost 4 years worth of research.

TOP CHANNEL SUBSCRIBER HISTORY
How they grow and at what rates they grow

For those that are curious how some channels grow from week to week. Here is a detailed graph showing the growth of 8 channels over the past few years. The channels to look at closely are the 5th and 6th channels.

Top Channels Subscriber History

Top Channels Subscriber History

Here is a link to the full size image
You will see that 5th channel grows and a slow rate up until 4/13/2008 where it jumps from 27,096 total subscribers to 43,588 subscribers in just one week. Whereas the previous jump from the week before was only a mere 512 subscribers. This channel’s subscriptions grew on average over the course of 71 weeks about 328 per week. After many of the changes I talked about in my hulu Tube video regarding the popular page and the promotion of a select few channels over the rest of the youtube website this channel now grows at a rate of 7,820 new subscribers per week over the course of the next 90 weeks.

You will see that the flip side of that happens to the 6th channel on this chart. This channel was growing very well for about 41 weeks gaining an average of 5,278 new subscribers per week. For reasons not exactly clear (the best guess would be using highly sexual video thumbnails and titles), this channel was completely removed from being on the popular page and other high profile sections of the site and soon after, this channel’s growth was all but completely stopped. For the next 61 weeks this channel only gained an average of 917 new subscribers a week. This was a drop of over 80% in subscribers. I will go more into this channels views and other details in another section of this commentary.

VIEW COUNTS CRASHING DOWN
The views for small partner and non-partner videos going down

In the Bottom Right of the previous image you will see a chart of another channel that had a lot of success on youtube in 2006 through 2008.

VIEW COUNTS CRASHING DOWN

VIEW COUNTS CRASHING DOWN

showing the stats for his videos that were averaging just over 700,000 views per video over the first 54 videos on this channel. The total view count for the first 54 videos totalled roughly 38,112,000 views.

JWCFREE VIEW HISTORY BEFORE AND AFTER YOUTUBE CHANGES

JWCFREE VIEW HISTORY BEFORE AND AFTER YOUTUBE CHANGES

In December, at the close of 2009, I took the average of the last 54 videos and it came up to only 5,949,000 views for the most recent 54 videos. I took this stopping point of 54 videos because this was about the time I had made my Hulu Tube video discussing the proposed changes that youtube was going to implement. This way I could find a way to gauge the impact of the new popular section of the site and how it has affected channels that have consistently made videos over the past 3 to 4 years.

Not to much of a surprise did I find that the average views per video have gone down just under 600,000 views per video. While this is only one example, I have found that most of the channels that have been making videos for over 2 years have had a significant drop in video views especially starting in 2009. This chart below shows how when this channel was in its infancy with very few subscribers that it was getting exponentially more views than it does to this day with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. In just the first 16 videos ever made on this channel it had over 12,538,000 views for its first 16 videos. This is an average of over 780,000 views per video when this channel was just getting started. The total for even just the first 16 videos alone is more than double the most recent 54 videos combined.

WHAT CAUSED THE VIEWS TO DROP?
The introduction to the popular page and hiding the sub search categories

There is an old saying out of site, out of mind.

For people who use youtube regularly they don’t understand how such a small change in the site can completely disrupt the flow of traffic from one area to another. If you use a site every day, these changes wont affect you much, but they do affect the casual user in a major way. Being on the 3rd page of a search on google is about as good as being on the 300th page. So if it is not right in front of someone, then it might be missed completely.

From what I have seen, the popular page was introduced to ensure the best possible placement for preferred partner channels and copyright infringing clips from tv shows and sporting events. While youtube clearly has to remove all copyrighted material from their site when notified, they can also benefit greatly by unknown users uploading these clips to their site.

DEAD IN 48 HOURS

What many people fail to realize is that for a normal video it has a shelf life of about 48 hours on youtube. Originally back in 2007 once your video went past 48 hours and was of the “videos of the day” and moved on to the videos of the week and of the month the views for these videos would drop to sometimes nothing or next to nothing. A normal video (not a viral video) used to get the majority of its views from being on this high traffic area of youtube, but once that first 48 hours was up and the video was naturally removed from this section of the site, there went the traffic as well.

Here is an example of how the 48 hour rule works with a videos exposure during that time it is on the videos of the day list and how the views drop to almost nothing once the first 48 hours is up.

Non Partner VS Promoted Partner Video Views

Non Partner VS Promoted Partner Video Views

In the image above you will see how the views look on a normal video made by a non-partner or a smaller partner. It will rise to a certain level and then pretty much flatten out. On the flip side lets take a look at how a video continues to grow that is constantly promoted by youtube well after the first 48 hours.

You will see how the views continue to flow into a video that is not really a viral video, but it is one that gets put on many sections of the site to keep the views flowing to it long after the first 48 hours of the videos life cycle.

THE POPULAR PAGE HAS NO 48 HOUR TIME LIMIT

There is one key aspect of the popular page that most people overlook. Back before these changes were made a video could only be on the “videos of the day” section for the first 48 hours. Once the 48 hours was up that video would move into “videos of the week” Then to “videos of the month”. The popular page has no time limit. There have been many videos that make it to the top front of the popular page that are up to and over a week old.

No time limit on the Popular Page

No time limit on the Popular Page

No time limit for being on the popular page

No time limit for being on the popular page

So this makes it virtually impossible for a new smaller channel to rise through the ranks of the videos of the day to get to the most viewed section of the youtube website. Whereas other partners can literally upload a video and in a matter of a couple hours be deemed “popular” and be put in popular page before its first refresh happens. The first refresh happens after a video gets to be about 6 to 10 hours old. This is the frozen view count that happens after a video’s view count hits somewhere between 300 and 350 views. Those first 300 or so views on a video are in real time. Then after that it will only refresh every few hours.

PROMOTED TO POPULAR IN LESS THAN 8 HOURS

Here is a screenshot of the popular page with 16 out of 23 video on the first page are in their infancy are already deemed “popular”.

Pushed Popular Partners with less than 400 views

Here is a link to the full sized image
One would think that since youtube has a section called “rising videos” that these videos would fall into that category first and then rise to the popular page after the first 24 hours or so. It seems that these categories are actually pretty meaningless as far as the titles go.

THE THUMBNAIL ADVANTAGE

For those that don’t remember the default page, when you clicked on “videos” it used to be the most viewed videos of the day. If you were lucky back in 2006 and 2007, you may be able to get your video up on the most viewed page. If you made it to the very front page of the most viewed videos of the day, it would ensure that you would get another 50,000 to 2,000,000 views depending on the subject matter and thumbnail. On rare occasions, the right video at the right time with the right thumbnail back then could get you a view count in the tens of millions of views as shown below:

Thumbnails Dont Help Get Views, do they?

Thumbnails Dont Help Get Views, do they?

The middle video in the thumbnail is sitting at around 35,000,000 total views at the time this blog was created. This is just one of many examples of how the right image for the thumbnail could cause a video to gain a tremendous amount of views. If you look at the video before and after, the views are nowhere near as close to the middle one. The video itself is actually a pretty good one. It mocked the people that were clicking on it to see some sexy video only to be found out that it was just a doll. Pretty funny. Needless to say all the perves on the site were angry and didn’t like it much.

The implementation of the popular page was created to ensure that certain channels would be place in prime position on the site to allow for maximum growth and to try to minimalize the traffic to non-partner channels. The reason for this is that for every click on a video that is not a partner with youtube it costs them money, but if they are able to push the traffic towards their partners they put in high rotation they can build those channels larger and in turn will allow them to more easily make the other lists as well like the most discussed, top rated and even the most viewed.

FOLLOW THE PARTNERS AND THE REVENUE

If you want to understand why this is being done like this, it is simple. Any video that someone clicks on that is not a partner is loss for youtube. So if your channel is not a partner and your video does not have an advertisement next to it, youtube loses money for EVERY VIEW that video gets, conversely, youtube generates revenue for every view that does have an advertisement next to it. So it is not by a great stretch of the imagination that youtube would want no one to click on any video that does not have an advertisement on it. This image below is from 2008 when they put the red triangle next to all partner videos to allow the user, with one simple click, the removal of ALL non-partner videos.

Show only Partner Videos Red Triangle

Show only Partner Videos Red Triangle

This is when I first realized that a channel must partner or perish.

SEX ON YOUTUBE

There has been a long history of sex related videos on youtube. Back in 2008 I made this video entitled sex tube where I suggested this feature of giving us the option to click on a button to filter these videos out for those that are not interested in them. Here is the video below:

Needless to say that my suggesting this to youtube got this video flagged for about 2 years. The irony being that almost all the sex videos that would be found on the right side of this one actually having sexual content were not flagged. I don’t think any company in the world could give google/youtube a run for their money when it comes to hypocrisy. It all boils down to if they like you or not. If you are on the protected list of channels you can gets hundreds of flags on your videos and they won’t be taken down, but if you are a nobody with no connections you will most undoubtedly get the boot.

2 CHANNELS – 2 RULES
One Promoted, one blacklisted, both uses sex to sell their videos

To illustrate this issue a little further on the double standards of this site and how one channel can use sex to sell their videos and another channel using sex to sell theirs are dealt with in two completely different ways. These channels both use sex to sell their videos, but one channel actually has the girl in the videos and the other you get some guy who will talk about a girl in the thumbnail for about 20 seconds with the girl no where to be found. So how does youtube handle this situation? That’s right, the partner channel that uses the fake thumbnail is almost always front and center on the popular page while the other channel appeared to get blacklisted from that page. Below you will see first hand how one channel was given a boost for using fake thumbs, while the other channel was made virtually invisible for actually having the girl in the video.

2 channels 2 rules

Youtube Partner Thumbnail Comparison and view counts

Youtube Partner Thumbnail Comparison and view counts

If you look at the views on the channel, on the top, its views went up roughly 300% when it started using these fake thumbnails to promote its video. Yet the other channel below who actually had the girl in the video that used her to sell the video got crushed when youtube decided to pull the plug on their exposure on the site. Their views went down over 90% when they were removed off of the high traffic areas of youtube. The one thing to keep in mind is that the channel on the bottom was growing at an incredible pace while in the green, but when youtube made a few changes in how their videos would be seen on the site this channel that had almost 250,000 subscribers fell completely off the map. So if this can happen to a channel that large, imagine how tough it would be for a brand new channel to make it on a site that clearly controls who gets where.

One little side note on the top 100 channels on youtube. This data in no way assumes to make claims that any particular channel makes either good or bad videos. This is NOT saying that the channels in the top 100 don’t deserve to be in the top 100. What this IS saying is that they would not grow as fast or have so many videos of theirs be in the highest traffic areas of the site. To give a little perspective on the rate of growth of the top 100 channels over the years. The number one channel in 2006 had roughly 60,000 subscribers, in 2007 the number one channel had roughly 195,000 subscribers, in 2008 the number one channel had roughly 650,000 subscribers and in January 2010 the number one channel had just over 1,750,000 and at the midway point of 2010 the number one channel has just under 2,500,000 subscribers.

The Number 1 Most subscribed Channel on Youtube 2006 - 2010

The Number 1 Most subscribed Channel on Youtube 2006 - 2010

While these percentages don’t seem as drastic as the view counts, the sheer volume of subscribers gained is astounding considering that the growth of the number one channel from 2006 was just over 60,000 the number 100 channel in July of 2010 is just over 300,000. The growth of these channels would naturally grow at a higher pace over time, but they would have to be making a lot of new videos every week to keep the growth rate up. Under the original system of youtube, the older videos would fade away and the new videos would take their place. Under the new system these channels and their videos are constantly appearing throughout the website.

SO HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOU?
How does a channel and video grow from when you first join youtube?

There are 3 types of people that use youtube. There are people that watch videos. There are people that create original content and there are those that do both. I happen to be one of those people that have done both.

I started watching videos on youtube in 2006 and I started making them at the very beginning of 2007. After making well over 100 videos and seeing how it works, I can tell you first hand how a video view count and channel growth would happen when I started my channel.

A channels first phase begins with little to no subscribers or support. You are on your own to either build a successful channel or have it become just another flop.

Since you start out with literally zero subscribers it is hard to tell right away if your content is any good or not. People would have to stumble across your videos by accident and if they liked them they might subscribe to you. So if you don’t know anyone that would mention your channel in a video, you are going to have a tough time getting your first few videos seen at all. After making the first 5 to 10 videos I slowly began to see my channel grow to a few hundred subscribers. This is the very first phase of any old channel on youtube.

The second phase is when those few hundred subscribers would start to watch your videos right away and they would in turn start to rate and comment your videos. This would put them on the site visibly in the top videos of the day. Early on your videos would most likely be in the sub-category like entertainment or people and blogs. So your video may be low on the list, but it was still on the list and it was visible for everyone to see. Here is a screen shot of how the videos page used to look below.

Most Viewed the day videos 2007

Most Viewed the day videos 2007

Now these categories are completely hidden from view. This will be discussed in more detail later.

So as people surfed around the sub categories looking for videos they may be interested in watching they would usually see the smaller channels that were just starting out at the bottoms of these sub categories like the top rated, most discussed and top favorites. So depending on the subject your video was on and how quickly people would see your video on the different sub categories, your video of the day would grow accordingly.

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SUBSCRIBER NUMBERS
What do these numbers really mean?

Having a lot of subscribers carries a lot of weight around youtube. I guarantee you if someone with a million subscribers emails someone they will most likely get a reply from those that they contact. On the flip side I am sure that the first thing people look at whenever someone emails them is how big their channel is. If this is a small-unknown channel they are going to bother replying to them.

So what is the truth behind the all important subscriber number?

The truth is that only a small portion of a video’s views comes from the people that actually subscribe to them. I have seen it as little as 3.5%. Below are a few examples of what percentage of people that watch a video are watching it from the subscriber module.

The Truth About Subscriber Numbers and Views

The Truth About Subscriber Numbers and Views

3.45% of views coming from subscribers

3.45% of views coming from subscribers

The amount of channels that someone is subscribed to varies from a few channels to a few thousand channels. That is unless that channel uses a subscription bot or a friend bot to subscribe or friend channels all over youtube. There have been channels exposing this practice which is illustrated below in this image.

Friend Request bot 188000 plus friends

Friend Request bot 188000 plus friends

I will discuss the use of bots and cheating the system in another section of this post.

The third phase of a channels growth is when a channel continuously creates videos on a regular basis and its core followers in the hundreds or a few thousands will continually watch all your videos. They will show their appreciation for your videos by commenting and rating them and even putting it in their favorites to help promote it or so they can watch it again later. During this phase your channel would start to be seen not only in the sub categories like entertainment or people and blogs, but you will start to be in the overall category that is the best videos of every subcategory. So that means of all the videos uploaded on youtube in the past 48 hours, your video could be one of the top 100 videos of the day. Most new channels that were created after 2008 will never have a chance to reach those milestones.

YOUTUBE CHANGES END 2007

Towards the end of 2007, youtube had made its first set of REAL changes that would negatively affect the growth of the newer and smaller channels. They hid the top rated, the most discussed and the top favorites from view. This does not seem like much, but the view counts began to show otherwise. Here is what the videos of the day looked like after these changes.

Youtube Changes at the end of 2007

Youtube Changes at the end of 2007

On the surface it doesn’t look like much to the average user, but only after seeing the views drop on the videos people were making, it became clear this was not helping the same videos they were getting in the months before those changes happened.

After seeing this happening to not only my videos, but other channels I have been watching I made this video titled “Youtube Changes Need Fixing”

This video was fairly well received at the time and gained 22 honors in the first 48 hours.

Youtube changes need fixing stats

Youtube changes need fixing stats

So it seemed pretty clear that I was not alone on my thoughts about these changes. This was the very first time I made a video that was negative about youtube in any way. I never planned on making any videos on this subject before and I didn’t plan on making any more after this one. Up until this time, I always felt that I had a fair chance of being viewed like all the other channels on the site. If I made a video and it got 20,000 views or if it got over 200,000 I felt that it grew according to the demand of the subject. Once these changes took place you could see a clear drop off in views soon after. Initially I thought this was just a judgment error and once people pointed the effects of these changes out to them they would realize this and go back to the old format that worked so well.

YOUTUBE CHANGED BACK IN 2008

Soon after all these videos began popping up on these new changes, youtube didn’t change the site back but implemented a different but more visible style to the site. Below is how the site looked after they made a modification on the videos of the day page.

New Youtube format 2008

New Youtube format 2008

What used to be on the right was now put above. Not as good as the earlier layout, but much better than the one mentioned in the video above. So clearly most people including myself were very happy that they listened to us and modified the page to a more user-friendly experience.

THE VIACOM LAWSUIT – VIACOM VS YOU VIDEO HISTORY

We now come to the dreaded Viacom lawsuit. While this lawsuit did originate back in 2007 I didn’t feel the effects on my channel until my viacom vs you video was taken down by a copyright claim from Viacom (or so I thought).

I created this video below to show the frustration of the user generated community that actually spend a lot of money in support of their media be it television shows or feature films or even music videos. It came out that in the lawsuit that Viacom was going to go after every users’ viewing history and uploading history and that was when people all over the internet spoke out against this action by Viacom.

While I do agree that Viacom and other companies like them should be allowed to protect their media from theft, they also need to leave the users’ private information alone. Their battle was with Youtube, not its users.

I made this video as soon as I found out that Viacom had made copyright claim against my video.

Within just a few days of making this video about the false copyright claim, my video was restored. I did not file a counter claim or take any action beyond this video. I made the following videos on this subject trying to help expose this very flawed system of false flagging and DMCA reform here on youtube.

WHO IS TO BLAME? AND DMCA REFORM
How could a video be taken down that had nothing wrong with it?

Once all the facts came out and youtube had a system where it would allow anyone with an anonymous email address to take any video down off of youtube, that was when I knew that youtube was to blame. Plain and simple. It is their site. It is their system. It is their fault. You can’t just create a system where any 12 year old who doesn’t like you can file a legal document against you or any other user. This is the equivalent of someone setting a box full of badges, tasers, guns, hand cuffs and pepper spray in a playground and telling kids under 18 to go ahead and arrest anyone they don’t like and use any force necessary. It is absurd. A kid is not going to see this as a REAL crime. They just see it as flaming someone. They don’t see it for what it is, a crime.

So once all this came to light after talking to Jeremy Zweig (Vice President, Viacom Media and Editorial) I realized how flawed the system really was and that Viacom itself had nothing to do with it. It was the completely inept system that youtube had created to deal with filing copyright claims on videos. So after thinking about this subject a great deal I felt I had a way to implement a system that could help all involved. It would help the users, the content owners and youtube. The details are in the video below.

THE DMCA REFORM FAILED – NOTHING CHANGED

At the very end of the video I stated clearly that it was up to the community to spread the word and maybe if enough people supported this video that maybe they would listen. Unfortunately the video was a complete flop. People were tired of the subject. This is why we fail. The first video now has well over 900,000 views and the DMCA Reform video only hit about 25,000 views in the first few weeks and now sits at a meager 40,000. That is hardly going to make youtube stand up and listen.

Unlike most other users that have made videos before and after mine, I kept up the fight after my video came back up. I didn’t want this same situation to happen to anyone else. It was bad enough I had to go through this personally. When most channels get a claim against them they just make a video about themselves and how they need their video back up and once it is back up they never talk about it again or try to help someone else whom this has happened to.

It was at this point that I knew the truth. We really didn’t matter on the site and even worse people will only support a single subject or topic for so long before they tire of it. Sure they get all up in arms for a day or two, but sooner or later the interest fades and no real progress is made. The solution was relatively easy and cost efficient, but youtube had no interest in fixing it.

So at this point I was pretty burned out on the subject. I spent months on it and we didn’t get anywhere. So I left youtube all together for about 6 months. I didn’t log in or anything. I needed a break from it all. FYI, I never made a single penny from youtube since my first video. This was all time spent on my own with no personal gain coming from this effort in any way. I knew one thing; the larger channels didn’t seem to worry about this because they were not getting the brunt of the suspensions. So I knew that because I had a decent amount of subscribers I might be able to build up enough support to help fix a system that is clearly broken.

If people show strong support for something, then you have some motivation to make more videos on a particular subject, but once it is clear that the desire for change of real improvement is lost, then any more videos would be pointless.

I never made a video saying I was quitting youtube or something lame like that. I always hated those types of videos. It always seemed like a desperate attempt to play your subscribers for sympathy. The only time I did say that I would stop making videos is when my viacom video was taken down. I said that if my video was not restored I was done uploading videos to youtube. I said it and I meant it. If my video would not have been restored that video “Viacom Guilty?” would have been my last video on this channel.

WORKING TOGETHER
How the smaller channels have a tough time working together towards a common goal.

So after the 6 months went by I talked to few of the people I knew fairly well on youtube and was thinking about coming back, but I also knew that with the changes in the site that we needed to have the information style channels work together to help promote each other. So before I came back to the site I sent emails to about 8 channels that were news oriented to help build one large channel and pool our subscribers together to help all the REAL news style channels to help increase the exposure of news related videos on the site.

INN The Internet News Network

INN The Internet News Network

So before I made my first video I wanted to contact a few of these channels and try to build a news colab channel. Needless to say that everyone who makes these “news” video didn’t see the value of working together on something like this and it died off before it even got started. The interesting thing to note here is that many of the top 100 channels will do colab videos with other top channels to help both channels grow. I first brought up this idea back in early 2007 when the partner issue came up when the first batch of youtube partners were brought in and were making money on the site. I was always for the partner program from day one. This video is proof of that.

Some people have erroneously come to the conclusion that I am against the partner program in general. This is not the case. I always felt it was needed to allow the site to grow into a full business model.

So over the course of the last year or so the news related videos have gotten less and less visible while being drowned out by smosh clones. Just like with TV, youtube has chosen to beat us to death with the same style of channels over and over again on the front page. Just like when E.R. Was popular every network wanted their version of E.R. Now we have 10 different C.S.I. Style shows all trying to milk that market till the last drop of interest is sucked out of it. Youtube is following that same philosophy. They see a channel do something and if it works they try to shove 10 more channels like it down our throats instead of looking for the next new thing and showing us that.

This statement above is not to say that the quality of the videos themselves are bad, but a little more variety would be nice. Before, the users themselves would rate comment and favorite the videos they liked. Now we are shown the same thing over and over again day in and day out. It is like flashing back to the days of Benifer and Gigli. While these channels may be good channels making good videos, it would be nice to have the old system back where we decide what was popular.

THE HULU TUBE VIDEO

The high and low point for this channel. For the Record I stand behind EVERY SINGLE WORD IN THAT VIDEO. If you can’t see that things have changed dramatically on this site in the past 2 years after reading this information, then I can’t help you. At this point and time with all the changes that have been made you would have to be blind not to see what is happening. First the beta channel that NO ONE WANTED, not even the top youtube partners (more information on this below). Then the ELIMINATION of the ratings system BEFORE you click on the video.

BREAKDOWN OF THE POPULAR PAGE

Now youtube is blatantly promoting commercials on the popular page that have only 37 comments and 31 total ratings with 20% of the viewers disliking the video.

Youtube Promoting Television commercials

Youtube Promoting Television commercials

Yet this video is right there on the top, of the front, of the popular page is over videos that have thousands of comments and thousands of ratings with 95% or higher liking the video. So if you can’t see this going on right now, then at this point you don’t even have your eyes open. The information is right in front of you every day. Nothing that is shown in this blog is not visible to anyone that uses this site.

For a little perspective. Here are some of the honors for one of the videos that I made that to my knowledge NEVER made the front of the popular page

Video Honors

Video Honors

This is just one example of many. I know that this has happened to other videos with a lot of honors, but I can only speak from my personal experiences with youtube.

That is the REAL beauty of the popular page for youtube. It has no real meaning. It’s as a beer company with a slogan like… Drink Duff Beer “the official beer of Friday Nights”. It means nothing! The most viewed videos of the day is pretty straight forward. A video with 200,000 views will be higher on the page than a video with 150,000 views. The most discussed page is the same way. A video with 500 comments will be higher than one with 450 comments. The favorites are the same as the comments and the ratings are also mathematically driven. The popular page is meaningless. This is nothing more than an extension of the youtube featuring system, except better. Youtube can have popular videos, that are clearly copyright infringing videos, on the popular page all day long, since they appear NOT to be hand picking them like the featuring system. Here is a screen-shot of the popular page that had 15 of the top 25 videos on the popular page that were television clips which were not uploaded by a network channel.

Popular page copyright infringing videos

Popular page littered with copyright infringing videos

Youtube has the best of both worlds. It gets to benefit from all the copyright infringing content, but it pays no penalty for that media being on the site. The dirty little secret is that youtube needs smaller users to upload this content to keep people coming to the site. A new channel can pop up and upload a copyright infringing video, but if it doesn’t make it to the popular page it will never get as many views as it does when it is on that page for days. It is one thing to have a copyright infringing video get uploaded to youtube, but it’s quite another to have that video promoted on their site on the front videos of the day page. They say they don’t monitor the website, but I think after using the site for the last few years, it is very clear that it appears that since they created a new page with no definitive parameters, any video can make the popular page. The lifetime commercial with 37 comments and 31 ratings is all the proof you need. This video was about as unpopular as a video can get. There was no real buzz for this video yet there it is on the top of the first page in the popular section. It is so blatant and obvious that it insults the intelligence of its users.

WHY RATINGS HAD TO GO

Why The Ratings Had to GO

Why The Ratings Had to GO

Once the ratings are completely removed the popular page will be even tougher to dispute.

They can’t push their corporate partners with a strong ratings system because they always get slammed. People have shown time and time again they want solid content, not some lame commercial or bait and switch video.

YOUTUBE VS TV

Here is a question for you. What do you get when you remove the ratings and comments from youtube?

You get Television.

If we wanted to watch TV we wouldn’t be on youtube. Watching this site getting taken down from the inside with a wrecking ball is just sad. What made youtube interesting is that you could actually interact with the video maker. Now even the once independent channel don’t show their subscriptions, friends or let people post a video response. They have morphed into their own little isolated television show. It is amazing to watch the fame go to their heads and close out the rest of the community. They have their select group of channels that they cross promote and now some of them have up to and over 5 different channels they make just to feed their ego’s. The videos on those channels are not that different to warrant that many channels. The side affect is that if a channel has a million subscribers that they can make a separate channel and that one will immediately grow to over 100,000 to 200,000 right away and this takes up one more slot in the top 100 most subscribed. This means eliminating someone else from this list for no other reason than to feed their own ego.

It is well known that I personally have two channels, but I quit one to start another channel and I didn’t make a new video on there for over a year and a half. I have to explain this here because some 12 year old that heard the word hypocrisy one time in a sentence thinks they know how to use the word in the comments section. So they will come here and try to use it on me and fail miserably. I have seen it time and time again.

YOUTUBE IS NOW A TALENT AGENCY, NOT A VIDEO HOSTING SITE

Before, they were able to claim a defence stating that they were just a video host and it was their job to remove items when a claim was made against a channel or video. Once they implemented the popular page and made that the default page instead of the most viewed, this changed them from a provider to something like a top 40 radio station playing the same old hits over and over again. Youtube at this point went from a video hosting site to a talent agency. Hand picking some channels over others and giving them airtime while others were excluded from getting into high rotation on their coveted front page. It is my opinion that when youtube created sections of the site that were not quantitative in measure like most viewed, top rate, most discussed and top favorited, that they lost their hosting status protection under the DMCA rules. If they are actively promoting channels and videos every day on their “popular” page this means they are not just a video hosting site any more. Therefore they can no longer claim that they have no control of what videos go where on the site.

Everything I’ve shown are things anyone can see if they know how to look for it. There are people that still don’t know if the world is round to this day, but just because you dont know that it is, doesn’t make any less of a fact. This video below illustrates that.

I watched a couple of videos on this subject that were made just a day or two of my video saying that my video was not true. The very first videos were all made by youtube partners. These are the same people that cash their paychecks from the very site they are taking sides with. What a shock. Interestingly enough they never once mentioned in their videos that they are in fact paid by youtube when they make videos so it is VERY CLEAR to anyone that there is a conflict of interest when they discuss this subject.

THE FACTS ABOUT THE HULU TUBE VIDEO
Lets look at a few facts before I go into this any further:

· Youtube themselves NEVER refuted these articles or my video
· Youtube themselves NEVER made any statement on the subject whatsoever
· The only people initially against my video were paid partners of Youtube
· I was NEVER contacted by them in any way regarding my video
· Libel and Slander laws prevent articles like this from being made (you can’t just print anything you want and not have any repercussions)
· My video was not the only one on this subject.
· Youtube posted that the Beta Channels would be live in July, but that didn’t happen for months later. (They clearly don’t meet deadlines when it comes to major changes on the site)
· Youtube implemented many changes that no one wanted, yet they did them anyway
· Some partners that made videos against my video, yet within one year some of them made their own videos urging viewers against things like the beta channel or the new beta viewer

It is funny that many people didn’t call out these channels for their blatant hypocrisy. One video they make, says they back youtube, then the next video they make is against them just like I did. So it is ok when they want to do it, but if someone else does then it is not true. These people couldn’t see it coming a mile away, yet now that it is right in front of them they want to act like they care now. These are the same types of people that were looking out for the icebergs on the Titanic. They had all the warning signs ahead of time, but they couldn’t see the ice until it was right in front of them. That just shows you how people really don’t pay attention to any facts. Some of their subscribers just blindly follow and think they can do no wrong. We all know these people as fanboys. The mindless drones who follow these channels around like they were listening to Jim Jones himself.

After making hundreds of videos and always supporting the community from day one, I was somewhat surprised at how easily people could be fooled into thinking this video was anything but legitimate. The word came out that youtube was going to make what appeared to be a major overhaul to the website. This was reported in the following links.

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-new-youtube-will-look-like-hulu-2009-3#comments

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10221459-93.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1023_3-0-5

These are just a few of the places that were talking about these kinds of changes that were to be taking place somewhere around April of 2009. So after taking a close look at this, I knew that if people didn’t speak up soon, we would be pushed into a small corner of the website. So I made a very pointed video illustrating some of the changes that had been made in the past and how if these proposed changes went through that the smaller independent channels would be marginalized to only a footnote in the overall site.

THE REAL PROBLEM
Why we failed

So just like before in 2007 I wanted to give people a heads up on this to see if we could speak loud enough for everyone to hear us including youtube. Some have criticized my video for being so pointed even to the point of calling it fear mongering. Which is absurd. The truth is I saw NO big youtube partners supporting the cause in the struggle between Viacom and the youtube users. I normally never do this, but I even emailed Michael and Natalie to see if they would help. They were in the top 50 most subscribed. Maybe they could help support the users in this. I traded a couple emails with them before so I thought that maybe they could make a short video on it. Neither email was returned. So I knew we were on our own in speaking out. Just after my Viacom Guilty? Video, someone told me about a blog by (at the time) a large youtube channel that posted my video on his blog. So I followed the link to read the blog and to my surprise it advocated doing nothing about it.

Letting the little guys do the work

Letting the little guys do the work

His exact quote was “I’m staying the heck out of it, and make videos of myself pouring candy into my coffee”. Normally I don’t care if people want to support a cause or not. It is their choice. The problem I had with this is that if he wanted to stay out of it, then stay out of it. To basically post a blog about a subject and then say I am going to stay out of it is about as lame as it gets. This is a person that when it affected him not getting partnered by youtube went on his own personal crusade to get his channel partnered and even made his own video about the abuses of Viacom with copyright law. Then when someone else talks about it, he is going to stay out of it. I don’t see how you can be any more self serving than that.

This was the reason why I made my hulu video as pointed as I did. I was tired of watching these larger channels sit on their asses while the rest of us were trying to take steps to help make this site better by speaking up and speaking out. Here is the part the really stings. When and if we ever win a battle with a company the likes of Viacom or Warner Music Group these larger channels would benefit from all the work of the smaller channels they were to busy to help. Most of the people that showed the most support were channels that had less than 5,000 subscribers.

SLANDERED AND LIBELED BY YOU TUBE PARTNERS

So the days came and went after the hulu video. The video took off and people uploaded it to their channels and did their part to support it. Soon after a small handful of youtube partners came along saying that this video was a lie. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised that anyone would say anything of the sort. In my entire time on youtube I have never once trolled anyone. I have never made a sock account. I never once up until that time made a single video against another youtube user. So I had to make a rebuttal video letting people know that these so called critics of mine make their money with youtube and that could very easily explain their “Pro-Youtube” Stance.

THE YOUTUBE BITCH SLAP

Some tried to justify their videos saying that they are independent from youtube in which they are independent, but they are also not stupid enough to speak out against youtube when they have seen the youtube partner bitch slap in action.

The Youtube Bitch Slap

Earlier in 2009 a channel made a video on youtube and it got censored from the website. I believe all the honors were removed because of some of the language used in the video. So this person makes a video saying that was B.S. that their video got taken down. Just a few short days later this channel was suspended outright. So this person makes a video saying that his channel got suspended and he doesn’t think he will get it back, but youtube said it had nothing to do with his censored video. It was because of a video that was made a while ago. I found that to be a VERY strange coincidence to have a channel that just happened to get suspended just days after a protest video about youtube and then they claim it had nothing to do with him getting suspended. I am calling shenanigans on that one.

So because of some of these videos and the fact that youtube seemed to delay these changes some people started thinking this was some sort of hoax. What people fail to realize is that you can’t just say or write anything especially about business and not get sued for it. There are laws against that sort of thing. Mainly Libel and slander laws.

THE HULU TUBE CONCLUSION

Here is the question that you must ask. If these articles that I based my videos on were wrong, then why was no one sued? Why did youtube themselves not say anything publicly refuting these claims? They didn’t do so because they had no grounds to do so. I never received one email correcting my video. I also contacted the source of the story and they stood by their story 100%. The only people refuting my video and the claims in it were people that were cashing paychecks from youtube.

So you can believe that:

A) Someone dreamed up this entire thing to trick you into believe this great big hoax and it was all some sort of elaborate post April Fool’s day joke that just happened to be right after all on accident.

Or you can believe that:

B) Maybe these stories were accurate and either youtube delayed these changes on purpose to avoid any more backlash or they just didn’t have everything ready to make these changes. They have been known to be late before so this is not some huge stretch of the imagination.

There are 26% of ignorant Americans that have no idea who we claimed our independence from. Some people when asked actually said China. This is NOT a joke.

That would have to make some of the founding fathers a bunch of strange looking Chinese people.

So if you happen to fall into group A), do us both a favor and stay away from my videos and blogs because you clearly won’t be able to follow anything else I have to say on any other subject.

THE BETA CHANNELS

So I figured I would wait and see what would happen over the next few months. Sure enough the beta channels were introduced and forced on the users. It is hard to even put into words how much people hated these channels. Here is a screen-shot of youtube’s own blog with literally tens of thousands of comments telling them how much they hated the new layout.

THE UNANIMOUS OUTRAGE AND PROTEST OVER THE BETA CHANNELS

One of my subscribers Convervativeco did a little research on the feedback the youtube users were posting on their blog. I asked him to keep an eye on the feedback and if he got me some information I would share it with everyone. The results were almost unanimous.

“Okay, I’ve looked over 200 comments on the Blog entry announcing the delusional idea of forcing us to have Beta Channels on 8 separate occasions. Here are the results of those polls:
(Against = % of comments against this Idea; Support= % of comments for this Idea; Spam= % of comments that were spam)
DAY 1:
10:45 PM EST
99.95% Against (190/200)
.02% Support (4/200)
.03% Spam (6/200)

11:45 PM EST
99.98% Against(196/200)
.01% Support (2/200)
.01% Spam (2/200)

Day 2:
12:45 AM EST
99.97% Against (194/200)
.01% Support (2/200)
.02% Spam (4/200)

9:00 AM EST
99.97% Against (194/200)
.015% Support (3/200)
.015% Spam (3/200)

1:00 PM EST
99%.935 Against (188/200)
.02% Support (4/200)
.045% Spam (9/100)

2:15 PM EST
99.96% Against (192/200)
.035% Support (7/200)
.005% Spam (1/200)

3:45 PM EST
99.965% against (193/200)
.02% Support (4/200)

6:30 PM EST
99.95% Against (190/200)
.025% Support (5/200)
.025% Spam (5/200)

If you average these together, you find that 99.98% are against this and .02% support this. I think that the 99.98 to .02 ratio is a good indicator of all You Tuber’s opinion of this because they put a link up on every channel. So everybody should know about this who’s logged in.

So with overwhelming 99.98% against this delusional plan, if You Tube actually lived up to their name, slogan and claim that they want to make your channel a personal space, they’d listen to the overwhelming people who oppose this and give us a choice between the new Beta and the Old Channels.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE TOP 100 CHANNELS AND THE BETA CHANNELS

Youtube tried to convince everyone that these new changes were great by promoting a handful of top channels that actually switched to this downgrade. Here is a video that shows that almost none of the top 100 channels actually switched to the new channels early.

Here are a couple of videos on this subject:

Virtually no one wanted to use this “2.0 Channel design”, but they didn’t care what everyone wanted. Interestingly enough one of my harshest critics of my hulu tube video made two videos against the beta channel change over. These channels were around when I made my video and it was found under the heading superseekrit before they went live. This is just another thing that some people said was not going to happen that was around when I made my video on this subject.

Here is something people may not be aware of when it comes to the beta channels. If you are a partner with an advertisement on it you only have just 3 videos viewable out of hundreds that you may have. The page over time has also proven to be very glitchy having problems loading from time to time and freezing up.

Beta Channel With Ad Layout Space

Beta Channel With Ad Layout Space

THE REAL POWER OF THE BETA CHANNEL

What people fail to realize with these new beta channels is that they stop viewers from seeing the related videos while they are locked into a particular channel. The reason why this is important is because millions of views that used to come from the related videos have now been eliminated due to this new beta channel player. For those users that use this site on a regular basis know first hand how many times they have watched a video and clicked on a related video after the video they are watching finished playing. This flow of traffic from one video to another has now been eliminated while a person is watching videos through the new beta channel player. While it cannot be for certain exactly how many views are lost, the fact that the related videos have been eliminated cannot be ignored.

So why would youtube create such a player that would function like this? Simple. When a corporate channel promotes their site and brings traffic to their channel their viewers will stay on their channel until they actively click away from it. So this gives that channel a higher chance for multiple video views of their videos rather than the user watching one video and moving on. This should increase the profitability for both youtube and the larger partner channels.

THE ALLEGED YOUTUBE PARTNER CHEATERS
The youtube partners that cheat the system make money and get promoted by youtube for doing it.

Back in February during the olympics a few youtube users hit the perfect storm for cheating the system for views in the most disgraceful manner to date. They struck pay dirt when Nodar Kumaritashvili the georgian Luger was killed during his run and the users couldn’t wait to cash in using fake thumbnails with fake titles claiming to have the “Raw Footage” of the accident yet it was just them mugging in front of the camera while pretending to give a damn. I really didn’t want to get involved in it at first but user after user kept pulling this same stunt, after the 3rd partner channel jumped on the bandwagon I made this video below.

THE BLOOD MONEY

I didn’t make this video because one person did this. I made this video because youtube clearly pushed two of these videos on the popular page allowing them to rack up over 8,000,000 views in just a couple of days. When channels are not only allowed to do this but be actively promoted in doing so they are just as guilty of exploiting this man’s death. I will give credit to the person that I mentioned indirectly in my video. He came by my video and posted the following comments on my video and my blog

“I will be honest, I never thought I did anything wrong. I don’t look at death the same way as others, I’ve seen too much of it and it doesn’t affect me the same way.

I will say your video put a foot in my ass, all bullshit aside, it put a foot up my ass. I never thought about it the way you put it. This isn’t to brown nose or kiss up to you, as I have always had respect for you. The points you made in the video put me in my place Real Weekly News.

After looking at it the way you put it, it does make me feel somewhat ashamed, because while of course I was trying to get views, I didn’t really think of the innocent. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong, so I struck while the iron was hot.

I deleted the third video yesterday, and have changed the title and thumbs of the 2nd video. Not because I’m scared of what people will think, I’m sure millions hate me already. I changed it because your video made 100% sense to me. I didn’t look at it like that before. Let me be the first to thank you for this video.”

This comment was made on my video when one of his supporters came to my video in his defense.

“I appreciate the defense, but this video goes beyond me not trying to offend. The video is right.”

While I thought it was in poor taste in what he did, he listened to what I had to say and didn’t get defensive and took one of the videos down and put a link to his videos to mine with a pause annotation asking them to watch my video.

Luge Video Annotation

Luge Video Annotation

He didn’t have to do anything, but he did a LOT more than some of the other people who did the same thing. That brings us to this guy here that saw his success with those videos and then tried to lie about it and on top of that he then tried to put the blame on people who were looking up his videos he posted with a misleading title and a misleading thumbnail.

Cheating the System for Views and Subscribers

Cheating the System for Views and Subscribers

He has been exposed as a bot user by the household hacker as well. His channel grew by over 10,000 subscribers in 2 days without even making a new video.

So now this brings us back the issue of spam bots and cheating on youtube and how it works and how they trick new youtubers into thinking these channels are personally sending them friend invites, subscribing to their channel and posting personal messages on their channel.

THE BOTS (Friend Bot, Subscription Bot and the Comment Bot)

Some people who don’t know how this works will think, how does this help a channel gain subscribers? It is simple. Many channels on youtube when they first start out are just looking for something to watch. So when someone who is popular on youtube sends them a friend request, they actually think that this person came across their channel and read their description and personally sent them a friend request. So that person clicks on their channel and looks at them and they might decide to subscribe to their channel. While this does not work all the time, it still can get them a lot of exposure by doing this tens of thousands of times or in this case maybe over hundreds of thousands of times.

There have been 3 types of bots that I know of being used on youtube:

The friend bot – this will search youtube and ask people to accept your friend request

The subscription bot – this will search youtube and subscribe to random channels

The comment bot – this will randomly post comments on other peoples channels comment section

The biggest outburst of the comment bot was when the preferred partner channels named Lisa allegedly used a comment bot to make her channel grow. Several channels made videos about this exposing this type of practice including one channel that was very large at the time and still is. It is the one time that Natalie spoke out for anything here on youtube and soon after Lisa made a video mocking her. It got pretty heated between these two big channels and this caused more and more people to get involved until almost everyone involved took their videos down or made their videos private. One of the few videos left on this topic is posted below.

So what happened when this channel that was outed by dozens of members of the community, for possibly using a bot to promote their channel? Were they suspended? Were they given a stern warning? Quite the contrary. This channel was featured making a video about spamming channels with random comments. Even better this was a colab video with other top youtube partners. Thanks to youtube themselves for featuring this video it garnered over 2,600,000 views on a subject that most channels would be suspended outright for doing.

This was when most of the people on the site started realizing that there was a double standard on youtube. Some people could cheat (allegedly) and get featured, while other would be suspended outright for trying the same thing.

No one should have a problem with a site having its own rules on how it wants its website to function. It is their site. They own it, but the only problem I personally have ever had is the blatant double standard of how it enforces its terms of service. Some channels get promoted and paid for making the exact same video as a channel that gets suspended. At some point, if this is done on a widespread enough of a scope, youtube can be seen as discriminating against some of its users.

MY REBUTTALS (Rebuttals to some of the common critiques on my channel and my video titled “Hulu Tube”)

Over the past year or so I have heard a few common statements that I feel need to address.

1. If you don’t like the site, make your own.

This is honestly one of the dumbest statements ever posted in a youtube comments section. Just because someone can make a website doesn’t mean they can just create something like ebay, amazon, google or youtube on their own. This would be the equivalent of living in New York City and saying to someone that was critical of the laws or the way a city is being run to rebuttal them with “if you don’t like New York City make your own New York City. A company as big as Microsoft would have a very difficult task in creating something to actually compete with youtube, let alone a handful of individuals without billions to pump into a clone site that would operate like youtube.

2. Youtube is a business and they can run it how they want to run it.

This is true. It is their website and they can run it how they want to run it. I have never have a problem with the youtube terms of service. Just like any site that has interaction with the people that use it like facebook, myspace or twitter, they have rules that you need to abide by to stay on their services. This was NEVER my issue. My issue was the clear double standards and blatant discrimination that has happened on this site. The rules seem to be selectively enforced. Some channels get suspended for making the same style of video as a youtube partner that gets promoted and paid by youtube. They make bold statements about freedom of speech, yet they have suspended videos that is nothing more than a person speaking in front of their camera with nothing else in the video besides them and the room as the background. Once this happens it is clear that it was suspended for what is being SAID in the video, not what the video contains in it. If youtube were to be open about censoring videos and not actually supporting freedom of speech on their website while admitting to a double standard of enforcing their rules I would NEVER have made a single video on this subject. The cards would be all face up and there would be no need for someone like me to point them out.

3. You should be thanking youtube for providing this free service

This is almost as absurd as the “if you don’t like it then make your own site” comment. Almost all sites like youtube, facebook, myspace or twitter ARE FREE!!! If they were not free they would NEVER have ballooned into such large sites with this high traffic going to it every day. The FREE is what made them SUCCESSFUL. If they had some sort of pay service per month or per Gigabyte payment plan the site would be nothing today. Almost all sites like this are free and the ones that are not are no where near a large and successful as youtube.

4. You owe your success to youtube for allowing people to see my videos

There are some people that make videos that owe most of their success to youtube. They have been partnered and promoted all over the site. Without that type of extra exposure they certainly would not have the success they have now or it would have taken a lot longer to get to the point they are at now. I would guess that roughly 99.5% of the ALL channels out there get little to no support and or promotion from youtube. My channel and my videos have fallen into this category. Since this is the case I have been able to see first hand how some videos are made popular and or featured almost immediately when they are uploaded and others remain almost invisible to general site traffic. If youtube had not become the ebay of video search engines, then some other company would have been. It was going to happen regardless of it being named youtube or something else. As far as being thankful to youtube for any of the success I have had on this site… To me this would be like the New York Giants being thankful to the network that broadcast the superbowl for helping them win. Or like Martin Scorsese Thanking ABC for helping him direct the Departed to an Academy Award for best Director. The Giants won the superbowl because of their hard work. Martin Scorsese won the Academy Award for his hard work. The network that broadcast the event or ceremony had NOTHING to do with the level of play or the quality of the movie. Again, there are some people that have been promoted all over the site to gain them more exposure, outside of those few exceptions the users who create content on their own should be thankful to a site that in some ways has hindered their success rather than support it.

WHY I AM NOT A YOUTUBE PARTNER ANYMORE

No longer a youtube partner

No longer a you tube partner

WHY I AM NO LONGER A YOU TUBE PARTNER

This was my second email from youtube letting me know I was accepted into the partner program:

Dear therealweeklynews,

(I will paraphrase this email to avoid any copyright issues since every email has a copyright on it.)

They thanked me for my interest in the partner program and let me know for the second time that my application was approved and they are awaiting me to complete my second and 3rd steps in the application process. They sent this second email to check in because I did not complete the other steps to begin in the revenue sharing process. They went on to say that if I was no longer interested in being in the partner program they would like to hear my feedback. So they let me know to feel free to reply with any concerns.

If they give me permission I will be more then happy to post their email to me in its complete form.

Sincerely,
The YouTube Team

Hello,

I hope you take the time to read this and possibly forward this off to someone who handles some decisions regarding youtube and the direction it is headed. I came to this site originally because it was the best way to broadcast myself. I hope that if you actually take the time to read this and know that I just want the best for this site, the users and the partners. Maybe if the right person reads this we can get somewhere.

I just noticed this partner accepted email recently. I am still interested in the possibility of becoming a youtube partner.

I want a few things addressed before I continue with this process.

I want these two videos that were unjustly flagged by your staff to be reviewed an unflagged as soon as possible:

OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY SINGING SCANDAL

SEX ON YOUTUBE

Judging by the thousands of comments the community themselves feel that you messed up on allowing those videos to be flagged. I suggest you read 50 to 100 comments and you will find that your decision was a very poor one to allow them to be flagged when the rest of the community feels they should not have been.

Here is one of the best ones to give you an example of how mad people were that YOU allowed this to happen.

“This is the video that prompted me to join youtube and say something. I am so sick of the hypocrisy of show business and the people in it, especially against women and girls as young as these two. Both of them will grow up believing there was something “just not good enough” about them, and they will always carry it with them. Not to mention the stupidity of flagging this video. BTW, Janis Joplin was beautiful.

MiaJacobs1″

This was posted on my OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY SINGING SCANDAL video if you want to find it.

As you know I will be giving all my money that I would make off of my videos to charity and I want the money to go directly to them, not me as I stated in this video almost a year ago.

So I would like you to get back to me on this and let me know how you would like to proceed.

I am sure that many people at youtube know that I have not been real happy with the way that the users have been treated here including myself. I have spent a lof time here on youtube and I have really enjoyed meeting people through your site that I would never have met without being here. The first year I was on this site I had almost nothing bad to say about it. Being here was a very enjoyable experience.

When you look at a video like this:

Then you see the hulu tube video. You may ask yourself how did we get here? The reason why we got here was because I tried to reach out to you tube on multiple occasions and never heard back from you. The reason why I have consistently had to air things out in public on videos was because no one ever bothered returning my emails. Maybe if someone wants to help people feel a LOT better about youtube and reach out to the community it would go a long way to building a better relationship with the users that feel very alienated by the way some things have been handled here.

I hope that this gets forwarded on to someone that really makes some decisions at youtube and they do care enough to get back to me. We all want to like this site. We all want to support this site, but it seems like you are doing your best to drive your own customers away from the site. This may or may not be intentional, but I have plenty of things from my time here to show otherwise. If you wonder why the hulu tube video went viral, it is because many people felt that video spoke for them too. This could have all been avoided had someone just taken the time to listen to us. you created a community counsel once in the effort to build the community, but look what happened, nothing. This shows that people dont feel that they are wanted here and that their opinion and feedback doesn’t matter.

Remember, we are the customers on this website. We are the ones that both provide content AND click on the advertisements. We should not be neglected. Yahoo was once the king of free email and search engines and now it is being dominated by you, “google”. It is one thing to be on top, it is another to stay on top. I am sure youtube does not want to be the next yahoo. If you keep this up, you might find this to be an inevitability.

I hope this is not the case. I hope that someone who has some control over decisions regarding the community actually reads this and gets back to me so that this site can become what we all want it to be. What many people once called their favorite website.

Best Regards,

The Real Weekly News

Reply from youtube:
Hi Realweeklynews,

(I will paraphrase this to avoid any copyright issues since every email has a copyright in it.)

They thanked me for my understanding, but they would not be able to support specific video inquiries. They said they will pass my email along to their policy manager. But they also let me know ahead of time that as a policy youtube does not comment on individual emails. They went on to send me a few links to their policy page.
Sincerely,

The YouTube Team

I want to move forward on this partner process with you, but I want those videos reviewed and I want a person to actually LOOK at the videos again. Children to mothers and fathers all agree that you dropped the ball on this one and these 2 videos NEED to be unflagged.

The responses are over 99% in favor of unflagging the videos. It is painfully clear to everyone that you made a mistake and not fixing it when you can is not going to help things. Have someone look at them again and READ some of the comments.

OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY SINGING SCANDAL

SEX ON YOUTUBE

If you can take the time to review the videos (incorrectly as the community themselves say) then someone can take the time to review the video again and actually watch it this time. I am not trying to be rude, but when you have over 1000 comments by all people of both genders and all ages saying that these videos should NOT be flagged, you should have the professionalism to take the time to listen to what the community (your own customers) has to say on a subject and FIX the problem.

Since someone may not actually go to the video and look at the comments. I will paste the most recent 10 comments for each video. I could hand pick them, but I will just show the most recent 10 from each and it is still unanimous from the last 20 comments. It is pretty much unanimous with thousands of comments that there was a mistake on these two videos. Make this situation right. It is clear to everyone that this was a mistake and it only makes youtube look bad to not fix this problem.

Maybe you should have someone from public relations take a CLOSE look at this. Maybe they will get the point. Since there are close to a million views combined and more and more people see every day that you cant listen to the very community that your website provides content to. I keep my videos clean and to be honest I am insulted to think that anyone would find any video I make to be offensive to anyone. I make sure not to use cursing and foul language to get my points across.

I hope that you will seriously take the time to fix this obvious problem that everyone can clearly see.

Second follow up:
Hello,

I have no advertisements on my videos yet because no one has bothered to re-review my 2 flagged videos. I hope you will take the time to READ this below and re-evaluate those 2 videos that were UNJUSTLY flagged by your staff. The community virtually unanimously agrees about 99 to 1 saying these videos NEED to be unflagged. I sent this email below and I have heard nothing back from anyone so I have not moved forward with putting advertisements on any of my videos. I hope to hear back from someone soon.

(This was my final email to youtube)

REMOVE ME FROM THE PARTNER PROGRAM ASAP!!!‏ (Email Title)

Hello,

I have sent 3 emails to you about my account since I was made a partner with no one replying to me about my concerns with my channel or my videos. I went in detail about the 2 flagged videos that the 99% of the community felt were unjustly flagged among other things. I thought that being a partner would possibly improve relations with your company and that maybe you would actually show some consideration for my requests. I was wrong. I initially did not accept the partner program and complete the process to be in the system, but I finally decided after over a week to put some of the issues with your company and how it handled its business into the past and give it a shot. Only to find out that there was virtually no improvement in working with youtube even with being included into the partner program.

So effective immediately, remove me from the youtube partner program. I will not participate in revenue sharing with your company and allow advertisements to be placed on my videos. I will just promote the charities on my own and hope people will support them on their own.

I tried over and over again for over 2 years now to deal with your company in a fair and reasonable manner, only to have my emails repeatedly ignored and my requests or concerns brushed aside. My channel on youtube has always been in good standing and I have tried to help this site in any way that I could. My revenue sharing video, my youtube changes video and the sex tube video were all constructive and resulted in a positive outcome on more than one occasion. After my changes video along with many others you listened to the community and revamped the site to be much more user friendly. Also within months of the sex tube video you got rid of many of those sleazy videos that were cluttering the front pages of the day. Ironically you allowed that video to be flagged even though you agreed with it enough to make some of the changes listed in that video.

My later videos over the past month or so were a little more pointed because I really felt that it was going to hurt the smaller channels on here way to much and I needed to speak up for them. If only you ever listened and showed some respect to your very own users this could, and should have been avoided. We don’t ask for much. All most of us ask for is the opportunity to have our channels succeed, or fail, depending on the quality of our videos. Instead of letting this happen, you have tried to consistently tell us what is popular instead of the community itself deciding that automatically. You have chosen the business model based on the rich get richer as opposed to trying to find ways to grow the new and up and coming channels. You in essence have created a barrier to entry system that only serves to hinder the newer channels and grow the already successful channels by actively promoting them ad nauseam.

The simple fact that you have virtually removed the ratings from the top videos of the day sections like most viewed and most discussed so that people cant see the quality of the videos on the list just goes to show that quality is not the main concern at youtube. The ratings system is the best way for users to let other users know what is good and what is garbage or misleading. Yet you have buried that category at the very bottom of the pull down menu as if it had no value to your users in any way. This just goes to show that quality is not a chief concern here and your double standards here between the chosen channels and the ones you deem expendable is clearly apparent to everyone in the community.

Is it really that hard to return emails to your own customers, or even your new “partners”?

So again, please remove my partner status immediately!

The Real Weekly News

——————————————————————————-

(This was my entire communication history with youtube after I became a partner with the site)

So what does this tell you?

This proves to all of you what I have known all along. Even when it came to making money on my videos that have been seen millions of times, they found it easier to remove me from the partner program than to simply return my emails or address my concerns. In a nutshell, this is why youtube loses money. They are, quite honestly, some of the worst business managers I have ever seen.

I often hear some pathetic youtube sympathizers going on and on about how youtube needs to make money they need to change this or that. What they are so clueless on is how poorly they work with individuals as well as businesses. They have to have one of the worst records of conducting business that I have ever seen. There is a reason they are loosing so much money. They are flat out incompetent. All I am waiting for is them to ask Obama for a bailout and they would most likely get it the way he gives away money to big business.

I have heard people say that “if it were not for youtube, you would not know who I am. So I want to thank youtube for allowing me to post my videos and for free.” I would say that following. “Whatever success I have had online making videos, I would like to thank all the people in my life for making me who I am today. I would like to thank all of you that supported my channel and my videos. Whatever success I have had on youtube is not because of youtube, it was in spite of youtube.

Thanking youtube for success would be like the New York Giants to thank the television network for them winning the super bowl against the New England Patriots. You would never hear an athlete thank the network for their success. The network had nothing to do with it. They simply broadcast the performance. People need to wake up and not be thankful to people that had nothing to do with your success. There are some exceptions to this rule. Some channels owe everything to youtube for being popular. They are always getting promoted. So in some cases, they NEED to be VERY thankful because without youtubes promotion and protection they would be no where near their views and subscribers.

I hope you found this post helpful and see why I demanded they remove me from the partner program. I simply cant work with a company that shows absolute disdain for their own customers. This was one of the biggest reasons why I have not made more videos. The fact that they created a site called “YOU tube” with the words “broadcast YOURSELF” only to hinder so many potentially successful channels makes it very difficult to want to make more original content for the youtube web site.

MY CENSORED VIDEOS

THE BIGGER PICTURE

There is a much bigger picture to all this that some people fail to realize. Some people say this is just another site and just go to the next one. The problem is that youtube is not just another website. It is one of the most important sites to ever be created since the masses started using the Internet back in the mid 90’s.

The ability to watch videos on demand is so much more than just another website. Youtube over the years has become a one stop source for all online video. If you can’t find it there it may not be online at all. Saying that youtube and on demand video is just another site is like saying radio or television was just another appliance like a toaster or a microwave oven. This is hardly the case. Online video is the future and an open platform where someone with just a camera and a simple editing program can reach tens of millions of people is something that has never existed before. So to have a site that was open to all individuals slipping away from us right in front of our eyes is extremely disappointing. The control and flow of information for at least 2 years was almost completely untouched, but inevitably as its success was undeniable and online video especially on youtube had real power. The power to give anyone that had the ability to create content the possibility to reach thousands if not millions of people for little to no cost to the content creator has never been available before now.

A hundred years ago it was the printing press that was the barrier to entry. To publish a newspaper in wide circulation was a major undertaking. It took a lot of time, effort and money to buy one or build one from the ground up.

Over 50 years ago the TV started to take over giving visuals to what the radio had been doing for years. The barrier to entry was never higher with the television. Cameras, broadcasting live or pre-recorded shows were extremely costly and for the longest time there were just a few networks that even existed.

If you have no idea of the power of the media, then you must watch these videos below to get an idea of how powerful the mass media is over the general public and how much influence it has over any country and its citizens. This goes well beyond one person with a camera making videos.

The Century of Self all parts 1 – 4

The Battle over Citizen Kane

These are two of the most important series of videos to show just how powerful the media is and how it affects your every day life. Online videos is just the next step from the newspaper to the radio to the Television to online videos on demand. If you think the people that control the other forms of media are going to just let this be an open forum you are wrong. There have already been bills put in front of congress to make vloggers pay fees to gain a licence in order to talk about the news. Do you think that video sites like youtube will be any different? I would bet any amount of money that the Internet as we know it will be completely dismantled in the next 10 years and made into something completely different than what it is today and what it was back in the 1990’s. Knowledge is power; the broadcasting of knowledge is an even greater power.

To see how this is affecting your kids, then you MUST see these video series below:

If after watching all 3 of these series of videos, you still do not get it then I don’t know what else to show you. The power of the mass media can be worse than any weapon of mass destruction. The wrong information will cause even the smartest of individuals to make poor decisions. It is a fact that “yellow journalism” has happened in this country in the past and it could be argued more now than ever that it is worse today than ever before.

Just listen to this quote from Lara Logan the Chief Foreign Correspondent from CBS News

The information you receive will affect everything you do from where you send your kids to school, what products you buy and where you invest for your retirement. Your decisions are only as good as the information you have in front of you.

Today we look at online videos as just another place to catch the latest stupid moment like Kanye stealing the Mic from Taylow Swift

Or the place to go to hear Mel Gibson make a complete ass out of himself.

But in reality, there are some incredible content from how to videos,

Special Commentary videos

Artistic videos.

Music videos

And even those videos that don’t really fall into a category

It seems that youtube is always trying to push sketch comedy on the users by having the popular page saturated with these types of videos on the front page day in and day out. Regular users like myself completely avoid this page knowing what will be there and in turn have to try to find other types of content on the sub categories because the front page is not even worth looking at unless you want to see those same 50 channels over and over again day in and day out.

It’s like they are trying to turn youtube into a sketch comedy television network just like break.com videos are more about people hurting themselves. The other genres of video are still here in the sub-categories, but they are no where near as visible on the site where it counts – where those channels can grow into larger more successful ones.

In the last year, I can’t remember when I saw an original video made by an average user that got 5,000,000 views. Back in 2007 an average youtuber could reach in the millions if they got lucky, but now even the channels with over a million subscribers don’t typically get a video viewed in the 4 to 5 million range where as JWCFree was getting 3 to 5 million views with 10 to 100,000 subscribers back in 2006 and 2007.

It seems that instead of people trying out new things and making it on their own terms with their own content, channels are basically being rewarded for imitating the same old content or even flat our plagiarising other people’s work (AND GETTING PAID FOR IT!).

This actually happened and this person is STILL a youtube partner at the time of writing this blog.

Youtube used to be what we all made of it. The better videos used to rise to the top because the community chose to support them. The videos that were disliked by the community fell to the bottom of the heap. Back in 2006 and 2007 if you had a video succeed or fail it was up to the content of the video. Today, that video will most likely never see the light of day because no one will ever see it unless it is an incredible viral video like the one below.

Watching this site morph into something completely different from what it originally started out to be is pitiful. Even worse is that some people don’t see what is right in front of their face.

WHY WRITE ALL THIS?
Why would anyone bother to write such a long in depth article on this subject?

I feel that I have had my chance to create a channel and grow it to a fairly successful level on my own with little to no support from anyone but my subscribers and supporters. Without them I would never have had any success here on youtube.

This is my way of giving back to the next person out there that wants to entertain or inform their potential viewers. I truly feel that if I were starting today or even back in 2009 that I would never have had a fraction of the success I did back in 2007. Today my videos receive a fraction of the views they once had and this is with my channel growing to over 1800% since my first video on the new channel. Braking 30,000 to 50,000 views was not an impossible task back then, yet now with almost 40,000 subscribers hitting the 10,000 mark is stretching it. This is the same channel with the same style of videos. The drop off is dramatic and this is a fact. The videos have the same ratings; they have the same comments and similar favourites, yet the views are nowhere near their old numbers. The JWCFree Channel mentioned above is one of the best examples there is on this subject. This was the same talented boy playing music for his viewers and the drop in views since these changes took place is staggering. The same person making the same videos with the same if not BETTER quality now with infinitely more subscribers gets a fraction of the views makes this abundantly clear to anyone that can do the simplest of math.

My only concern when I first started making videos was to try to make the best quality videos I could. That was it. My original goal was to make 100 videos. I never had a subscriber count goal or a video views goal. My videos may not be the best videos out there. I have no delusions that my channel is the best or even deserves to be the most viewed. It does not. I will say that while my videos are not the best out there, they are the best I could do with my limited skills and resources. So I can be happy knowing I did my best and it’s up to the viewers if they like them or not. I can live with the success or failure of my channels and my videos if the results are from the people and not the powers at be at youtube.

The fact is, the quality of the video is the only thing you can actually control. However good or bad is not up to you but to the viewer. You cannot control how people will react to your work.

Personally having never made a dime from youtube in over 3 years, the only real motivation was the success of my work. Having millions of people watch my videos and having tens of thousands of people subscribe to my channels was enough of a reward at the time. If I had been paid that would have been a bonus. There is nothing wrong with being paid to create videos. In fact that should be the natural evolution in the video making process. Once a channel gets to a point of building their audience and their content improves it only makes sense for them to maybe attempt to create content full time. If the audience is there then why not?

My videos have evolved over the years. I started with literally no experience in video editing. No experience in doing narration or voice over. I was just one person with something to say and I found that some people were interested in hearing me say more by subscribing and supporting my channels and videos. I know there are people out there right now who were as I was over 3 years ago that said why not just stop making videos because the success is little to none. Why would anyone keep making videos if they can never get over the hump and reach their potential audience? Anyone will stop making videos eventually if they feel that no one wants to watch them. It would be discouraging to anyone to make 20 to 30 videos and never have a single one hit 500 views. It is also just as discouraging to make several videos with hundreds of thousands of views yet being able to barely crack 10,000 views on a video. So it is easy to relate to those just starting out because these changes affect us all.

So in essence I do this because I feel I owe it to the new talent that is trying to develop their channel and build their audience. The success I have had in the past can never be taken away, but the newer talent out there may never get their shot like I had simply because they started here too late.

If only another site would step up to the plate and try to be what youtube once was they could be some competition, but from what I have seen they have given up on trying to gain marketshare and are happy being a very distant 3rd or 4th place in the market. Maybe if someone with any pull with another site actually reads this we can get some where. I would like to try to help a company compete with youtube. So this is an invitation to those sites to respond to this blog and try to become a serious competitor to youtube.

Competition is what makes all products and services better. Strong competition makes the dominant business in any market forced to try to compete and make their business model better by trying to actively gain or retain market share in their industry. Youtube has no such competition. If it did then they would have to make the site more competitive. Since all the other video hosting sites seem to have thrown in the towel and seem to have help relegate youtube to the default number one video site, youtube doesn’t need to concern itself with the desires of the users of their site because where are they going to go?

Until someone or some company starts to gain market share and forces youtube to give its users a better product, they don’t need to listen to us. This is and what always has been the problem with a monopoly. Youtube has a virtual monopoly on traffic for online video. No other site even comes close at this point. The only hope is that once yahoo was the king of search engines and then along came google. Maybe a company will come along just like google did and give youtube a run for its money. It is not impossible, but it is going to take a company with a lot of money and vision to do it. The time is right for a site to challenge youtube for its marketshare; the only question is who will it be?
